Over five years ago, Nintendo jump started the portable gaming market by introducing the DS. Hailed as a massively popular device, the DS offered a leading edge design, great games and is responsible for introducing gaming to a wider audience. Since then, Nintendo have produced many updates and new models, but which of the different Nintendo DS models is good for gamers?

Despite being the oldest and most outdated console, the original DS remains popular. New models are not sold in shops, but lots are sold for cheap costs online, and this adds to their popularity. The original model is also able to recognise the earliest incarnations of gaming titles which are no longer accessible to the later models. If you can see past the size and weight, this model is great for those on a low budget, the most cost effective of the different Nintendo DS models.

Next up, the DS Lite did not offer a massive departure from the features of the original, but as the moniker says it reduced the size and weight impressively. Curiously, the DS Lite also offers the longest battery life of all the different Nintendo DS models, evenwhen compared to the newer ones. The DS Lite remains widely popular with those who like less expensive consoles and are not worried about the extra features of the DSi.

Nintendo DSi represented the most outstanding improvement to the formula. Throwing in loads of awesome new multimedia capabilities,including game downloads and twin cameras. Also, all the features of the first DS were built upon, with the display and sound being expanded. The DSi is the most technically impressive of the different Nintendo DS models, and currently the most well liked.

And with the DSi XL coming soon, there’s lots of choice when it comes to it. The previous incarnations offer less features and sheen, but are easily affordable and still offer brilliant gaming. However, if you’re after multimedia capacities and increased bang for your buck, the later models are a smart choice. One point is clear though, all the different Nintendo DS models supply a brilliant gaming experience!
