The Right Wood for Furniture
Furniture nowadays is made of different kind of materials from aluminum to iron and even plastic. But for the people with a higher class, the wood is always the most preferable option. Wooden furniture is generally more long lasting and evergreen. Readymade furniture doesn’t offer much choice over the type of timber that is used but custom cabinetry offers you the option to choose the material according to your wish. But the kind of wood that should be opted depends on a number of factors, for example the purpose and the place. A chair maker will use a another kind of lumber for the chairs while a cabinet maker will favor some other one. In custom furniture, the choice changes greatly according to the room that the furniture is going to occupy. the reason being that different woods have different charachterstics like hardness, softness, texture and flexibility. We will discuss a few commonly used ones.
Mahogany
Mahogany is most likely the most widely used wood for furniture. The reason for its popularity is due to both its sturdiness and its color. The color of this hardwood can range from a dark brown to reddish brown. It is used in superior furnishings, boat making, plywood and outdoor furniture making. This wood can last for years and has the ability to defend against swelling and shrinkage. During the 18th century, mahogany became a verywidely used furniture wood in Europe.
Maple
Maple is another top quality hardwood; it is mostly very light brown in color. Its color makes it perfect for confined spaces where more brightness is needed. Maple is very famous for its silky even texture. It is used in the making of fine furniture, kitchen cabinets and bowling alley floors.
OAK
Oakwood is a very heavy hardwood and one of the most commonly used. There are further two type of oak, white oak and the red oak. Oak is famous greatly for its texture of hefty rings and rounds. United States and Canada are gifted with numerous Oak trees. The oak tree can get tainted easily so it is easy to get it coloredtinted in a different color. Oak wood is used in building boat frames, furniture and floorings.
Beech
Beech is also one sturdy hardwood used for making chair and desks. It is of light color typically and therefore it can be easily tainted. In America and Canada, Beech is found in a good quantity.
Pinewood
Pine is softwood that is generally found in various parts of the world. There are many different types of pine like Ponderosa Pine and sugar Pine. Both types of wood are used in furniture making. Pine is usually yellow in color. It is extensively used in making plywood and veneer. Pine is famous for its beautiful knots.
Cedar
Cedar is also softwood used for furniture making. One very distinct quality of cedar is its pleasaent aroma. This aroma makes it a very favorable for making chests and drawers as it repels moths and insects and also perfumes the things kept inside.
Other than these types there are several more kinds of wood, each with different characteristics and uses. Plywood, veneer and MDF (Multiple density fiber are rather man made woods made by layers or laminates of other natural woods. In some cases the usage of these woods is preferable than using the natural wood.
