Getting Rid of Leaves
Every year, the same story comes back: with the end of the summer and kids going back to school, you might suddenly realize that even though you like summer with all the sun and vacations and all that, you really are an autumn person deep down in your heart. Whether you’re driving to work or just walking down the street minding your own business, you cannot take your sight away from all that beauty covering everything in sight, muffling your steps. Do you also secretly wish you could be 10 years old again and run around and enjoy all the golden leaves, kicking your way through them? In such a dreamy mood you get home and look at your own lawn and the dream ends, because you realize that whereas someone else’s leaves are perfect fun (since they’re not your problem), your own leaves are not, because you have to get rid of them. However, don’t loose your spirit and read further, as our 2nd Toronto Homeowner Tip is just about the best ways of yard waste disposal.
Not a long time ago, everybody used to burn the leaves or use them for mulching, there was no unnecessary fuss about it. Nowadays, don’t even think about the burning option - unless you are willing to apply for an open burning permit, which might even take you until spring, honestly. An obvious approach is to sweep all your leaves into your neighbours yard, but this might lead to you getting twice as many in reward next year.
Community services
To begin with, you have to choose whether you will have the city services pick up your organic waste, or if you will choose to make the most of it on your own. For the community services, get enough kraft bags, as yard waste packed in any kind of plastic bags is no longer accepted in Toronto. The next step is to gather all the leaves into these bags, either by applying a good old fashioned rake or by the means of more modern options such as leaf blowers. You can do this yourself or employ your own or neighbourhood kids - for sure they will be eager to make some pocket money. In any case, you will need to check the collection schedule to find out when to put the bags out for collection.
